The history of the stone oak forrests

in the serra de tramuntana THERE ARE not only beautiful olive trees, but ancient stone oak trees (Quercus ilex). the old forests are in danger of extinction as the invasive pine trees (pinus halepensis) take over, pine trees grow fast and tall, and spread shallow roots near the surface which tent to fall in storms, taking with them huge plots of lands including the medieval dry stone contructions. Therefore the importance of silviculture and sustainable forestry is given. Last not least a consciously cared for forest will prevent wildfires to spread especially in the many dry months of summer. We would never fell a stone oak, bu only use the wood of fallen trees from stroms.
